    Attention deficit disorder in children and adolescents

    Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is now being diagnosed in many of our regular classroom settings. ADD has many symptoms that accompany the disorder. Two of these symptoms are: inappropriate levels of sustained attention and impulse control and poor regulation of activity level to situational demands (American Psychiatric Association, 1987). It is believed that this disorder begins in early childhood and can continue on , throughout childhood and adolescence. According to Barkley, Fischer, Newby, & Breen (1988), the mean age of onset is 4 years. More males than females have been found to evidence this disorder with the incidence ranging from 3:1 to 9:1 in favor of males (Barkley, 1981 ). Children and adolescents who experience this disorder are unable to concentrate on a given task

    Ocular Hypotensive Effect of ONO-9054, an EP3/FP Receptor Agonist: Results of a Randomized, Placebo-controlled, Dose Escalation Study

    Purpose: To assess pharmacodynamic and safety profiles of ONO-9054 following single and multiple day dosing in subjects with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. Materials and Methods: This was a phase I, single-center, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled dose-escalation study. Nine subjects were randomized to each of ONO-9054 3, 10, 20, 30 μg/mL and 12 to placebo. Subjects received a single drop to each eye at 07:00±30 minutes (single dose). Following a 4-day no-treatment period, subjects were dosed once daily for 14 consecutive days (multiple day dosing). Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured regularly and compared with baseline measurements. Ocular examinations assessed safety and tolerability. Results: Mean IOP decreased dose dependently. Following single dosing, IOP decreased from 22.9±4.0 to 15.9±2.3 mm Hg (ONO-9054, 30 μg/mL) at peak effect 9 hours postdose; the reduction in placebo-treated subjects was from 22.3±2.4 to 21.5±3.3 mm Hg. Following multiple day dosing, the greatest reduction in IOP occurred 1 hour postdose on day 18, from 23.3±0.6 to 15.1±2.4 mm Hg (ONO-9054, 10 μg/mL); the smallest reduction at this time was from 23.9±0.8 to 18.6±2.0 mm Hg (ONO-9054, 3 μg/mL). Pressures remained reduced on day 19, 25 hours after the last dose, when the lowest measurement was 15.8±2.1 mm Hg (ONO-9054, 10 μg/mL). Anterior uveitis and vitreous detachment were each reported in 2 subjects and considered moderate by the Investigator. Ocular hyperemia and tolerability symptoms were generally mild and transient. Conclusions: ONO-9054 was well-tolerated and elicited dose-dependent reductions in IOP, which were sustained for at least 24 hours following 2 weeks of consecutive daily dosing

    In conjunction with the recent critical assessments of the life and work of R.D. Laing, this paper seeks to demonstrate what is revealed when Laing’s work on families and created spaces of mental health care are examined through a geographical lens. The paper begins with an exploration of Laing’s time at the Tavistock Clinic in London during the 1960s, and of the co-authored text with Aaron Esterson entitled, Sanity, Madness and the Family (1964). The study then seeks to demonstrate the importance Laing and his colleague placed on the time-space situatedness of patients and their worlds. Finally, an account is provided of Laing’s and Esterson’s spatial thinking in relation to their creation of both real and imagined spaces of therapeutic care

    Menstrual cycle phase does not predict political conservatism

    Recent authors have reported a relationship between women's fertility status, as indexed by menstrual cycle phase, and conservatism in moral, social and political values. We conducted a survey to test for the existence of a relationship between menstrual cycle day and conservatism. 2213 women reporting regular menstrual cycles provided data about their political views. Of these women, 2208 provided information about their cycle date, 1260 provided additional evidence of reliability in self-reported cycle date, and of these, 750 also indicated an absence of hormonal disruptors such as recent hormonal contraception use, breastfeeding or pregnancy. Cycle day was used to estimate day-specific fertility rate (probability of conception); political conservatism was measured via direct self-report and via responses to the "Moral Foundations” questionnaire. We also recorded relationship status, which has been reported to interact with menstrual cycle phase in determining political preferences. We found no evidence of a relationship between estimated cyclical fertility changes and conservatism, and no evidence of an interaction between relationship status and cyclical fertility in determining political attitudes. Our findings were robust to multiple inclusion/exclusion criteria and to different methods of estimating fertility and measuring conservatism. In summary, the relationship between cycle-linked reproductive parameters and conservatism may be weaker or less reliable than previously thought

    Prostaglandin metabolite induces inhibition of TRPA1 and channel-dependent nociception

    BACKGROUND: The Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channel TRPA1 is a key player in pain pathways. Irritant chemicals activate ion channel TRPA1 via covalent modification of N-terminal cysteines. We and others have shown that 15-Deoxy-Δ12, 14-prostaglandin J(2) (15d-PGJ(2)) similarly activates TRPA1 and causes channel-dependent nociception. Paradoxically, 15d-PGJ(2) can also be anti-nociceptive in several pain models. Here we hypothesized that activation and subsequent desensitization of TRPA1 in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons underlies the anti-nociceptive property of 15d-PGJ(2). To investigate this, we utilized a battery of behavioral assays and intracellular Ca(2+) imaging in DRG neurons to test if pre-treatment with 15d-PGJ(2) inhibited TRPA1 to subsequent stimulation. RESULTS: Intraplantar pre-injection of 15d-PGJ(2), in contrast to mustard oil (AITC), attenuated acute nocifensive responses to subsequent injections of 15d-PGJ(2) and AITC, but not capsaicin (CAP). Intraplantar 15d-PGJ(2)—administered after the induction of inflammation—reduced mechanical hypersensitivity in the Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) model for up to 2 h post-injection. The 15d-PGJ(2)-mediated reduction in mechanical hypersensitivity is dependent on TRPA1, as this effect was absent in TRPA1 knockout mice. Ca(2+) imaging studies of DRG neurons demonstrated that 15d-PGJ(2) pre-exposure reduced the magnitude and number of neuronal responses to AITC, but not CAP. AITC responses were not reduced when neurons were pre-exposed to 15d-PGJ(2) combined with HC-030031 (TRPA1 antagonist), demonstrating that inhibitory effects of 15d-PGJ(2) depend on TRPA1 activation. Single daily doses of 15d-PGJ(2), administered during the course of 4 days in the CFA model, effectively reversed mechanical hypersensitivity without apparent tolerance or toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our data support the hypothesis that 15d-PGJ(2) induces activation followed by persistent inhibition of TRPA1 channels in DRG sensory neurons in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, we demonstrate novel evidence that 15d-PGJ(2) is analgesic in mouse models of pain via a TRPA1-dependent mechanism. Collectively, our studies support that TRPA1 agonists may be useful as pain therapeutics

    Participatory Process for Implementing a Colorectal Cancer Screening Intervention: an Action Plan for Local Sustainability

    Background: Rigid protocols can hamper translation of evidence-based interventions from research to real-world settings. This investigation aimed to develop procedures for modifying the study protocol of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project and to analyze the theoretical constructs that underlie this process. Methods: The research project is a dissemination and implementation study of the Educational Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening (EPICS), an evidence-based intervention targeting African Americans in the United States. The study is being conducted in a partnership with community coalitions in 15 different cities. Each site initially presented unique issues that required modification of the study protocol. Results: In order to honor underlying CBPR theory, it was necessary to negotiate protocol changes with the community coalition at each site, while insuring preservation of the core elements of the intervention. Conclusions: We discuss the ways in which this represents a narrowing of the gap between CBPR and traditional research approaches

    NASA's Robotic Lunar Lander Development Program

    NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory have developed several mission concepts to place scientific and exploration payloads ranging from 10 kg to more than 200 kg on the surface of the moon. The mission concepts all use a small versatile lander that is capable of precision landing. The results to date of the lunar lander development risk reduction activities including high pressure propulsion system testing, structure and mechanism development and testing, and long cycle time battery testing will be addressed. The most visible elements of the risk reduction program are two fully autonomous lander flight test vehicles. The first utilized a high pressure cold gas system (Cold Gas Test Article) with limited flight durations while the subsequent test vehicle, known as the Warm Gas Test Article, utilizes hydrogen peroxide propellant resulting in significantly longer flight times and the ability to more fully exercise flight sensors and algorithms. The development of the Warm Gas Test Article is a system demonstration and was designed with similarity to an actual lunar lander including energy absorbing landing legs, pulsing thrusters, and flight-like software implementation. A set of outdoor flight tests to demonstrate the initial objectives of the WGTA program was completed in Nov. 2011, and will be discussed
